In AniMat: Silly Old Deadly Bear (2022)
Line of Events
Four kids make a mysterious discovery on their home planet that lands them lost in a strange and dangerous galaxy. Jude Law stars in The Skeleton Team and more stars from a galaxy far, far away. The holographic circus that entertains Neal’s little siblings is the same one that Chewbacca’s family sees in the infamous Star Wars holiday special (1978).
Skeleton Team is a kids’ show
And that’s a good thing, because Star Wars has often been kid-friendly, so why not make a kids’ show with a Star Wars theme? But it’s not an adult-friendly show about kids like Stranger Things or Paper Girls. It’s more like a show made specifically for ten-year-olds and nothing else.
Skeleton Crew starts out in the suburbs
It’s a suburb from the Star Wars universe, but take away the robots and aliens and it could be where I grew up. So that was an interesting twist for a moment or two. Unfortunately, these suburbs are populated by boring characters with uninteresting problems.
Will it get better when Jude Law comes along?
And yes, it’s all a set-up for a big moment at the end of the first episode, but I was so bored with this first episode that I just started skipping ahead halfway through, and even the last act felt simple to me. Maybe. But I feel like if the first episode of a show is so boring that I can’t stand it, it’s unlikely to get much better anytime soon.
